Content Providers

With consumer’s increasing desire for On Demand content such as videos and music, content providers are quickly ramping up production to meet this expanding market need. However, content providers face difficult business decisions in the process.

Option One: Aggregators

Using an aggregator can cost thousands of dollars per month. As most content providers are offering a combination of free and premium VOD content, this can make achieving return on investment (ROI) virtually impossible. Plus, in order to use these services, TV networks, movie studios and other content providers must surrender control of the very content that communicates its brand and promotes additional offerings.

Option Two: Bringing Technology In-House

Content providers also have the option of bringing technology in-house to create and distribute assets. However, this also comes with some challenges:
  • Maintaining an open environment: Content providers need the ability to mix and match technologies according to their unique business needs, preferences and roadmap. However, while many vendors profess a commitment to open standards, they fall short in practice, attempting to “own” the entire infrastructure. This can leave many companies to wonder, “What’s the point of open standards if we can’t set our own course technologically?”
  • Optimizing ROI: With good reason, business needs drive all technology decisions. As such, any solution selected must be appropriate to the situation. For instance, you do not want an infrastructure to create and distribute 600 hours of content per month if your near-term plans call for only 50 hours per month. In other words, you don’t want a battleship if all you need is a Boston Whaler™.
  • Assuring Enterprise-wide Adoption: The best technology in the world only works if the organization embraces it. New systems put in place must adapt to that environment and the people using it—not the other way around. If the introduction of new technology also introduces “culture shock”, these new capabilities may collect dust through organizational resistance.
